Maz and I decided to celebrate our 2 months in Hong Kong by going out for Dim Sum (also known as Yum Cha). If you don't know what dim sum is, you go with a group of people, sit around a round table with the lazy susan in the middle, and order lots of different dishes (certain dishes are served for dim sum, so not your regular Chinese dishes). You drink lots of green tea, made with real tea leaves, and spin the food around and take what you want. It's such a big variety. and so much food, but doesn't cost very much. And it's a great community activity to do together!
We had fried chicken feet, fried octopus tentacles, glutinous rice wrapped in seaweed, pork balls (barbecued pork wrapped in this thick floury pastry), vegetable balls, congee, and many other delicious dishes. It was a food frenzy.
We went for dim sum in this area called Sam Shing just a little ways down the road from where we live. No one really spoke English, but fortunately we had a dim sum book, with pictures and the Chinese words for the different dishes and we were able to point and order that way.
Any time I've ever had dim sum here, we always get put in the back corner, sometimes even in our own room. We've concluded that this is done because a group of Westerners is pretty distracting for many of the other patrons in the restaruant. Just part of life in Asia!

Oooh! This thing sounds like lots of fun! What a great way to socialize and eat lots of food. :-) That is the best way to try new things too.
