Good Works

This week has been quite hectic. It was very writing intensive for me, which I actually really enjoy but still a bit overwhelming at times. Somehow, I got most of it done, and am really looking forward to a rest this weekend.

Last night, our Communications team (7 of us) went down the road for Chinese (what else?) to catch up and hear from Marnie, our graphic designer. She recently went to visit some of our consignees (the grassroots organisations we ship to) and also to meet the child she sponsors in Thailand. So she traveled around Thailand and Cambodia, meeting the receipients of the goods we've sent. I loved looking through her photos and seeing the various items we had here in HK now furnishing schools in these rural villages. It was just amazing, and such a strong reminder of the end product of all the work we are doing here. We may not be the ones right there handing over the goods, but we are just one step back from that, and it was powerful to see the transformation of buildings and lives through the donations of beds, chairs, desks, and computers we had originally received from the HK community.

One story that particularly stood out to me is one of the consigness works with children and has a few blind kids as well. They had sent one of the blind kids into a nearby village to find other blind people so they could help them. They found one man who was the most downtrodden in his village. No one paid him much attention, and he lived in utter poverty. Through the resources they had received from Crossroads, they were able to train him in pig farming and he is now the wealthiest and most respected man in the village (one difference being his house is cement rather than a rickety wooden shack that many others live int). Amazing!
