Decadence At Its Best

Back about six months ago, I made a work-related trip to the Grand Hyatt hotel in Wan Chai, on Hong Kong Island. While there, I learned they had a very big, and very expensive, dessert buffet. Since then, Maz and I have dreamed of going there to indulge in all the magnificent delights, but it's waaaay out of our price range. Well, recently Maz's parents came for a visit, and asked Maz if there was something special she wanted to do. She told them that she and I both would love to do the dessert buffet at the Grand Hyatt ... and so her dad decided to fund this adventure for us!

So tonight, Maz and I dressed up (the Hyatt is very posh) and headed out for our very decadent evening. We boarded the 962B (instead of the regular 962) and had the entire double decker bus to ourselves, which is very, very unusual. So of course we went to the top, and sat in the very front and were as loud as we pleased.

We ascended the big, black, winding staircase to the next level, passing a shimmering fountain on the way. We walked around marble pillars and came upon a whole wall of windows overlooking the harbour and the many buildings and skyscrapers that make up the impressive Hong Kong skyline.

Once we entered the Tiffin Lounge, where the dessert buffet is held every evening from 8 pm onwards, we were seated in comfy arm chairs where the waiters pulled out our chairs for us. We craned our necks to see what we could of the buffet, and gave our drink orders to our waitress. When she returned with our beverages, she first poured Maz's Sprite into a glass from the bottle, then the remaining Sprite into its own little glass pitcher for later (fancy places think of everything!). I had ordered a lemon iced tea, which was brilliant, and came with, instead of sugar packets, a small pourer with sugar water in it should I choose to pour it in. There was also a live jazz band playing at the restaurant.

We next perused the buffet, oohing and aaahing over the many wonderful features. There was a table of many fresh fruits, cut and peeled and arranged in designs. There were cakes and other sweets lining other tables as well as a cheese table and bread table. They also had a waffle bar with freshly made waffles, and next to it a table with many toppings to choose from, ranging from your basic maple syrup to the creamiest peanut butter I've ever laid eyes on. They also had several ice creams, one being Malibu with pineapple which I quickly placed on my plate to devour later. The 'piece de resistance' however was the unmatchable presence of both a chocolate and a white chocolate fountain, with many fruits and other crackers and cookies on sticks to dip in the fountains. Soooooo gooooood.

On the first trip we each took, we definitely splurged. Chocolate and hazelnut cake, blueberry cheesecake, waffle with strawberry cream, tiramisu, creme brulee. The next trip saw ice cream, cheese, chocolate covered strawberries. Fruity desserts made the cut as well as did other treats.

I also decided to be a tourist to the max and snapped quite a few photos, which you can view below. I don't think we could have "mmmmmmm"ed enough to cover just how magnificent this dessert buffet was. The people at the Grand Hyatt have my compliments.

We stopped frequently to digest, drink water, and chat and had a lovely time hanging out. Our water glasses were never empty, and dirty dishes didn't last long on the table as attentive staff were ever present to look after us. Two and a half hours, and MILLIONS of calories later, we got the bill and headed back down the grand staircase. We said good-bye to the fancy lifestyle, and walked the few blocks to the bus stop. We boarded our bus (the 962) and headed home, grateful for the gift of a fancy night out all paid for, but happy to get home and enjoy a well deserved sugar crash.

That looks like a dream world.

Say, how do you say your friend's name Maz? What does it rhyme with?
